Get
what
you need to make a page

- Getting Nvu
- There
are several
ways of getting
Nvu -
the application I have decided to
standardise on for developing and maintaining the site. If you
encounter problems when using
Nvu mail
me
and I will help. Use the method that
suits you best!
-
- You can go to the
Nvu site http://www.nvu.com/
and download the one that
matches the operating system (e.g.
Windows, Linux ) of the machine you will be using to make pages.
Remember where you save the file - you will need to know that
before
you can install
Nvu.
NOTE : This is the best
place
to go to get the latest version of
Nvu and is where we all go to begin.
NOTE
: The files are not small ( bigger than 7meg ) so
expect it to
take at least an hour to do a download over a 56k dialup
connection on a good day! Make sure you do the download in callmore
time, and that your modem will disconnect the line when the download is
complete if you plan to leave the machine unattended.
- You can ask to borrow a
CD from a friend
or ask them to make you a
copy. Offer your friend a blank CD if you want to have one to keep.
This is quite legal, and is encouraged.
- If you get stuck, mail
the webmaster
and say what is giving you grief.
- Installing Nvu
- This
is easier than you may
think.
-
- For
Windows users
- In Explorer,
browse to
where you saved the file when it was downloaded - or to the folder on
the CD where the application is stored.
- Double
click on the
file and follow the instructions!
Nvu will be integrated into the Start menu.
- For
Linux users - As
root, in a console
(X-session or tty terminal) install the RPM.
Any user can run
Nvu from an X-session console by entering the command nvu - If
you want to
integrate
Nvu into the desktop, follow the appropriate procedures for your chosen
environment.
- Before you start
- All
applications come with a
set of default configurations so they will work "out the box". This is
a good thing, but I strongly
suggest you set
Nvu not to "Use CSS styles instead of HTML elements and attributes".
From the Menubar it is under Tools, Preferences, General on the Options
window.
It is no train smash if you don't do this - it is just me being a bit
neurotic about file sizes, download times & costs!

Next we need to have a quick look at the steps along the way in making
and publishing the
page.

(Do you want to see related
pages, the whole
site or the non-frames Sitemap?)
