What you need to make a page.

A computer.
The one you are using is probably good enough for the job. If it is less than 5 years old it almost certainly is!

80% of the web site (up till April 2005) was developed on a Pentium 133 with 80meg of RAM (bought in 1997) running Windows NT4. So don't think you need the "latest and greatest" hardware and operating system. There is a difference between nice to have and need to have.
I currently use a PII 400 with 256Meg RAM for maintaining the site. That is my definition of need to have for hardware! Anything better is a bonus.

Normal computer skills.
I assume you can use a mouse, know how to drag & drop, can switch between windows on the application bar, can use the Menu Bar, can manage files and folders with the Explorer [a console inLinuxLinux.]

A web browser.
The one you are using is fine. You will use it to check your work as you go along. Your work will be checked in a number of browsers - including Firefox 1.0.1, Epiphany 1.0.7,  Mozilla 1.2.1,  and Internet Explorer 5.

An application to write web pages.
There are many applications that can write Web pages - you can even use your word processor (e.g. Word Perfect, MS Word or Open Office - though these allow you to create all kinds of problems I have to correct before the page can be published). However, the best thing is to use an application designed specifically to make web pages because they are technically better than word processors at doing this job. We are going to use Nvu to build the page because it is technically sound, easy to use, works on any operating system, and is free.

Some things from the webmaster!
Do not worry about that now - we will discuss that before you build your first page!
