The Parish of Roodepoort may be said to have started in the days of Bishop Bousfield who wrote in 1886, "I paid my first visit to the then commencing Witwatersrand Gold fields, I think in October. At the top of a rising ground......... there stood twenty-eight or twenty six shanties rather than houses, of which sixteen were places for the sale of drinks, and an hotel, in the dining-room of which I held the first church, or I think, any service." Soon it was necessary to have a permanent priest, and in 1887 the Revd. J.T. Darragh, a somewhat fiery but immensely able Irishman, was given charge of a Parish which included the whole of the Reef: It was as a result of his dynamic energy that most of the Reef parishes grew. In 1896 Roodepoort was self-supporting and "needed no assistance from Diocesan Funds."
Ninety nine years ago - on June 24th, 1903, the Church of St. John the Baptist, Roodepoort, was dedicated by the Rt. Revd. W.A. Carter, Lord Bishop of Pretoria. Evacuations had begun on February 13th that year, soon after the Revd. C.A. Lane became Priest-in-charge with commission to build a church..........
On Advent Sunday 2001, The Revd. Martin L K Louw was instituted as the present Rector of the Parish.
