Anglicare Counsellors

anglicare

Anglicare is a non profit, voluntary organisation that offers trained support counselling/listening and is affiliated to the various Anglican churches in the Diocese of Johannesburg. Anglicare falls under the authority of the Bishop, Brian Germond.

Anglicare was started over twenty five years ago at the suggestion of Bishop Timothy Bavin.  He saw an increase in the need for lay counselling beyond what the clergy could provide.  Today clients come from all walks of life. Support counselling is free of charge but a small donation to an Anglican Church or Anglicare is appreciated.

All support counselling is confidential. Issues may include relationship problems, work related issues, trauma, depression, children, bereavement, HIV/AIDS and there are Anglicare counsellors who work specifically in these fields. Pre-nuptial support counselling is also offered.

While all Anglicare counsellors are practising Christians, the attitude is one of embracing all spirituality and the non judgemental approach is applied to all regardless of their lifestyle or belief system.

Anglicare’s aim is to provide a safe, resting place for people who have recognised the need to pause, reflect and address their discomfort and concern. Writer Maya Angelou says, "There is no agony like bearing an untold story inside you."  Anglicare Counsellors aim is to listen and contain these stories in a safe space.
