Coalition of Anglican Childrens'
Homes
(COACH) |

COACH is a
partnership formally created between St George’s
Home
(active in the East of Johannesburg), St Joseph’s and St
Nicolas’ Homes (in the west) and the Diocese of Johannesburg.
It grew from a
vision to develop a model of coordinated governance and delivery of
child and youth care services, in order to increase the level of
accountability and share resources between the Homes and the Diocese.
Although not the first of its kind in South Africa – we aim
to develop a model that is based on best practice models and ultimately
become a Centre of Excellence, accessible to other organizations in
southern Africa.
The Diocese provided us with many of the professional skills
that we
needed to create the legal framework for COACH as well as to guide us
in realizing the vision.
The formation of COACH was a challenging but natural
progression for
the
Homes that all provide services to vulnerable children and families
within de-stabilised communities and which are deeply affected by
extreme poverty, HIV/Aids and rampant domestic violence and child
abuse - just some of the complex factors that impact on their daily
lives.
COACH essentially forms a professional administrative
umbrella for the
three organizations, with the intention of channeling more resources
into the direct services that reach more than 2000 beneficiaries each
year.
The introduction of standardized human resources practices
and an
effective performance management system -alongside an intensive
skills development and assessment exercise, are just some of the key
activities underway in 2005.
The services delivered by the Homes compliment each other and
create a
fluid continuum of care for the children and families being assisted
by the various projects.
