Presentation to Synod | Synod Conference report

The presentation given by Arnold Smit to Synod on 3 August 2002

Many of the people who attended Synod requested a copy of the presentation for reference purposes. It was decided to publish the data on the web site because

• the material is not confidential
• it demonstrates another way in which the site can be used to communicate to attendees, to the broader family of parishioners and also beyond the borders of the diocese.
• individuals can decide to print paper copies if they want or make use of the on-line version.
• putting the presentation in web format guarantees that anyone with a computer ( a 486 with Windows 3.1 or later ), a modem and a web browser can read the document. Had we left it in the original form it would only have been accessible to the few with fast machines and the latest version of Microsoft software.

Warning #1 : Presentations are graphical in nature and the images for each slide are large (up to 42K) so download times may be quite long for each image.

Warning #2 : The presentation opens in a new browser window - so you have to use the status bar to get back to the Diocesan web site.

Technical note : The original presentation was prepared in Microsoft PowerPoint 2000 - which I can not read (because the file format cannot be read in the older version of Powerpoint for which I have a licenced copy). Instead of spending over R5000 to get an updated version, I obtained Open Office 1.0 (the fully licenced version being FREE - and is a viable replacement for Word, Excel and PowerPoint ) and opened the PowerPoint file in that. I then just exported in HTML format and answered a couple of questions when prompted to do so. I could have prettied it up but wanted to show just what can be achieved with very little effort so it was left "raw".
