Message from Bishop Brian Germond to users of the Johannesburg Diocesan Website
January 2004

Since the very beginning, God has been calling his people to new life and inviting them into the place of transformation. God speaks to us in scripture, but also in the words of others. In words - be it a sudden turn of phrase, a discordant image, and even in the known and familiar - God touches our hearts, changes our perspective and brings us to a new place. God's words bring healing and wholeness.

But words can also be hurtful and inflict pain. Throughout the Anglican communion in recent months, harsh words have been spoken. Those words have brought distress and division, and have moved us from Christian hospitality to hostility. With each harsh word brokenness is multiplied and God's kingdom undermined.

At this the time, therefore, we want to welcome you to this our diocesan web-site. Whoever you are, wherever you are from, whatever you believe, you are welcome. May this site be a place of a true hospitality, where strangers can become friends, where friends can become family, and where we all can know the reconciling love of God that breaks down barriers.

Our hope and prayer is that this site will be a place of warmth and refreshment, a place of peace and tranquility. But even more, may it be a place where God speaks to us, touches us, and brings us into the place of transformation.

I end with words from our baptismal liturgy :
"We welcome you into the Lord's family.
We are members together of the Body of Christ;
We are children of the same heavenly father;
We are inheritors together of the kingdom of God.
We welcome you."
